Sharing help safely

Start with a useful public lead, not someone’s personal information.

Two useful ways to begin

Need a lead

Where might I look?

For example: “Is there an official place to check winter firewood permits?” or “Where is the library events calendar?” Start with the Around Here directory.

Have a lead

Here is a public source

For example: “This public library posts its activity calendar here.” Provide an official public URL and describe what it helps people find.

Send a suggestion without exposing someone

  1. Share a general question or sourceUse the Commons private note form. Select Need a lead or can share a public lead.
  2. Keep identifying information outDo not post a home address, phone number, children's information, exact location of someone needing care, passwords, or financial details.
  3. The host checks before sharingThe host may link to a public directory or ask for your separate consent to publish a contribution. The Commons does not match strangers, guarantee help, certify providers, or hold money.

What about offers to provide a service?

Suggestions about repair work, firewood, or other paid services are treated as unverified leads, not as endorsements. People should contact the original provider, check licenses or permits as applicable, and make their own informed decisions. Do not send cash or personal records through this Commons. A proposed public request or offer should have a clear end date and must be removed or renewed when that date passes.

The Commons is not monitored for urgent assistance. For emergencies or an immediate need, contact an appropriate service directly.
